Second national artisanal fishing census declared a public necessity

The Production, Micro and Small Business and Cooperatives Commission approved this Friday, November 10, unanimously, the proposal for a single article to promote the “Law that declares the carrying out of the second national census of artisanal fishing in the maritime sphere of public necessity and national interest.”

In this way, the aim is to obtain basic statistical and updated economic information on the number of fishermen, shipowners, artisanal vessels, their technical characteristics, fishing areas, fishing gear and gear used, the species they capture and the risk status of are. This census would be carried out after 11 years since the first one was carried out.

“They will also be evaluated socioeconomic characteristics of the family nucleus and its composition, its participation in associative organizations, the conditions of access to the market and the commercialization of artisanal fishing, that allows the adoption of short, medium and long-term development policies, in order to implement comprehensive programs for the development and better management of artisanal fishing,” indicated Roberto Sánchez, technical secretary of the commission.

In this sense, it was also pointed out that the necessary inter-institutional coordination will be carried out with the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), which is in charge of the organization and execution of the census, the Institute of the Sea of ​​Peru (IMARPE), the General Directorate of Captaincies and Coast Guard (DICAPI) of the Peruvian Navy, the Ministry of Defense and the regional governments of the coastal departments, to provide the facilities according to their competence for the execution of this standard.

Likewise, the replacement text of Bill 4167/2022-CR presented by Congressman Bernardo Pazo Nunura was approved, which seeks to train artisans to achieve their formalization and convert their activity into a source of self-employment.
