The same day that the second industrial anchovy fishing season began, Thursday, October 26, preventive closures began to be applied due to the incidence of juveniles; that is, a resource that measures less than 12 centimeters.
In addition to this, the extraction authorization from the Ministry of Production (Produce) indicates that fishing can only be done from mile 10 onwards. Both measures have been considered by the National Association of Fishing Shipowners (Anap) of the Law 26920 counterproductive, so they decided to paralyze all their activities and start protest actions.
In their statement of claims, the following points stand out: that Imarpe and Produce “update” the permitted catch size of anchovy; that the regulations of the Impulso My Perú program be modified, since it is restrictive for them; and the resignation of Minister Ana María Choquehuanca“due to its demonstrated inability to direct the destiny of the national fishery.”
Specialized sources in the sector maintain that the pressure to lower the minimum catch size for anchovy is similar to what happened with the sardine, a measure that contributed to its disappearance in the Peruvian sea.
For its part, the National Fisheries Society (SNP), which brings together the metal fleet, issued a statement to show solidarity with the situation of the Anap and pointed out that its members will independently evaluate whether they will join this strike measure.
Hours later, the companies CFG Copeinca, Pesquera Diamante and Pesquera Hayduk They announced that they would paralyze all their activities indefinitely. from Monday, October 30. “Due to the lack of empathy on the part of Produce with the fishing sector to implement regulatory measures in accordance with the current context that allow us to successfully conclude this second season,” said one of these companies.
Produce meets with the industry
Over the course of the week there was silence from Produce regarding the situation that the sector was going through until yesterday. After the session of the Council of Ministers, the head of this portfolio indicated that she would meet with members of the industrial sector.
“I will go talk to them to (know) what situation we are facing and always try to offer them a solution within the meaning of the support that we can have in Imarpe,” said Choquehuanca.
