National blueberry production fell by 52% due to climate change

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) detailed that during August the production of blueberries, avocados and poultry fell in year-on-year terms. It should be added that in that month the GDP contracted 0.63%.

Blueberry production—in which Peru is the world’s largest exporter—totaled 20,137 tons, 52% less than in the same month last year. The smaller harvested areas, as a result of El Niño Costero and Cyclone Yaku, which hit the northern coast of the country, explain the decline.

The crop decreased in the 3 main producers in the north: Piura (-79.7%), Lambayeque (-78.5%) and La Libertad (-50.1%); as well as in Áncash (-33.3%) and Lima (-12.5%). Only in Moquegua and Ica did it increase (22.9% and 4.2%, respectively).

While, avocado production was 45,041 tons, 6.9% less than in August 2022. The adverse weather conditions in La Libertad and Lima dragged down the fruit yield by up to 32.8%.

And finally, Peruvian poultry production fell 1.1% due to the lower placement of chickens due to the increase in the price of inputs to feed birds (soybeans and hard yellow corn). It should be noted that in 22 regions the result was negative, but in Lima it varied by 0.7% – it is the main market, since it covers 56.7% of the national total.
