The national and international crisis, caused by the political context and the instability of the dollar, has been affecting several economic sectors in our country. One of them is the livestock sector, which has reduced milk production by half in recent years and the sale of beef has been suffering a severe blow.
The livestock leader of Lambayeque, Nelson Villegas Campos, stated that today the milk production It is no longer a profitable business, due to the high cost of investment in feeding the cows and the low profit. He pointed out that those who stay in this activity do it more out of love for their animals. Therefore, he emphasized the need for support from the authorities.
“Lambayeque was the third dairy basin nationwide. Some time ago it produced about 120,000 liters a day and today it only reaches half that. The price of food of cows has increased so much that it ends up harming ranchers. Of the 60,000 liters that are milked per day, 40,000 are purchased by large companies, which pay S / 1.60 per liter, which does not represent a profit,” he explained.
Next, Villegas Campos added: “In terms of meat production, we were in fourth place nationally, but right now there is a decline because ranchers no longer want to fatten their animals, because it costs a lot and that is not reflected in the Profits. Before they paid us 19 or 20 soles per kilo of meat in Lima, but currently they only offer you 15.”
Livestock CITE projected
Asked about the concern of the Lambayeque ranchers, the regional governor Jorge Pérez Flores indicated that they have been working with the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) a Center for Productive Innovation and Technology Transfer (CITE) in order to promote the pasteurization of milk since this will allow them to obtain a health registration and better conditions to offer their product at a higher price.
“There is a CITE that we are working with Midagri to help us in the technology part so that milk production, from milking to the end, has a clean chain that allows a bacteria-free dairy,” he concluded.
