The Ministry of Public Works reported that the table on the Quito Lago Agrio road was destroyed by the effects of the natural phenomenon that affects the sector.
The The Ministry of Transport and Public Works reported a few moments ago that a section of the Quito-Lago Agrio highway, located in the El Reventador sector, it was destroyed by regressive erosion. Almost in parallel, the company Petroecuador reported that since 10:30 on this December 10, the Trans-Ecuadorian Pipeline System (SOTE) and the Shushufindi-Quito Poliducto suspended crude pumping activities and fuel derivatives respectively.
The Ministry indicated that the crossing on the Baeza – Lago Agrio road, San Luis-Reventador sector, was suspended due to the loss of a section of the road table. And he recommended using the alternate route: Y de Baeza-Y de Narupa-Loreto-Coca.
Meanwhile, Petroecuador pointed out that the drainage of fuels from the pipelines began, as a preventive measure, due to the complex situation that the Piedra Fina sector is going through, Napo province, after the effects of the regressive erosion of the Quijos River, which put this strategic infrastructure of the country at risk.
The manager (s) of EP Petroecuador, Pablo Luna reported that the purpose of the measure is safeguard the integrity of pipelines transporting hydrocarbons from the Amazon.
The public company personnel are implementing contingency and immediate response actions to protect the integrity of the pipelines and the environment. To this is added the permanent monitoring in the area, especially at critical points of influence of regressive erosion, whose activities are coordinated jointly with other institutions of the state.
Nowadays, EP Petroecuador has built six variants of the SOTE and is in the development of the seventh. There is also the work of an emergent by pass of 280 meters, tasks that are carried out with the support of the personnel of the Army Corps of Engineers, to avoid affecting the integrity of this infrastructure and the Shushufindi – Quito pipeline.
It should be noted that actions are coordinated in the legal framework in order to safeguard the legal security of the contracts that this public company maintains.
The day before yesterday, la private company reported that OCP also initiated a process of draining your pipeline, so that in case the existing by-pass is destroyed, there is no greater environmental damage with a potential spill.
In April 2020, the two pipelines: Petroecuador’s SOTE and the private OCP had ruptures, due to the action of regressive erosion, which generated enormous economic and environmental losses.
Regressive erosion has reached 7.9 kilometers from the catchment works of the Coca Codo Sinclair plant, which could be affected by this phenomenon.
