By Executive Decree 886, President Guillermo Lasso has officially suspended his scheduled trip to Seoul, South Korea from October 7-13, 2023.
Lasso was in the United States on personal commitments, but planned to travel to the country this weekend to conduct a “pre-signing” of the trade agreement, for which he would meet with his counterpart Yoon Suk Yeol and other senior officials. Due to the prison crisis that started in the last few hours, the president returned to the country and cut short his tour of the Asian country.
However, in the same decree, he ordered the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Gustavo Manrique, and the Ministers of Production, Foreign Trade, Investments and Fisheries, Daniel Legarda, “to coordinate and carry out the relevant actions within the framework of the official visit and bilateral meeting between the governments of the Republic of Ecuador and the Republic of South Korea, which will be held in the city of Seoul.”
Ecuador’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed to this newspaper that Manrique and Legarda traveled to South Korea on the night of October 7.
They are accompanied, as part of the official delegation, by an official from the Undersecretariat for Ceremonies and Protocol and another from the General Secretariat for Communications of the Presidency, as prescribed by Lasso’s decree.
