However, sources from the Chinese concessionaire informed La República that the expert opinion still needs to be presented to the National Port Authority (APN) to resume work in the affected area of Peralvillo, adjacent to the Panamericana Norte.

The objective of the Cosco Shipping company is to have the first stage of the Chancay Megaport (US$1.3 billion) ready by the last quarter of 2024, when its four berths should be inaugurated by Chinese President Xi Jinping at the APEC summit.

Subsequently, the company plans a total investment of US$3.5 billion in the construction of the 15 moorings of 141 hectares. The port will connect with the North Pan-American Highway through a 1.8-kilometer tunnel with three vehicle lanes, according to the ongoing project.

According to the Chinese Embassy in Peru, Chancay is destined to be the new “Shanghai” of the west coast of the Pacific, and could capture 30% of the demand that today lands in Callao, in addition to becoming a cornerstone of the Route of silk in the region.
