US federal government could run out of funds

The United States could face a federal government shutdown on October 1. This is due to the lack of an agreement between the Senate, mostly made up of Democrats, and the House of Representatives, under the leadership of the Republican party, on budget amounts and fiscal debt.

One of the main issues under debate is the inclusion of military and humanitarian aid from more than US$24 billion destined for kyiv (Ukraine), a proposal that has been opposed by Republicans.

Final decision

Kevin McCarthypresident of the Chamber, in a last attempt to get out of the crisis, proposed an emergency strategy called “stopgap”which has been approved with 335 votes in favor and 91 against.

This would allow the paralysis of activities to be postponed and continue financing the Government for 45 more days.

However, it will now pass into the hands of the Senatewhich must evaluate giving the green light to the proposal.

It should be noted that the measure does not contemplate providing financing to Ukraine, which could affect the Democrats’ decision.

Consequences

According to White House Budget Office (OMB), the situation could affect up to 1.5 million civil servants and around two million military personnel, who would stop receiving their salary or enter into a process of technical unemployment.

The interruption would affect air traffic controllers and public employees of the Transportation Security Agency (TSA), which would cause delays in flight departures or even airport closures.

Furthermore, the social food aid programs and support for victims of natural disasters could also be delayed.

The data

Losses. According to Goldman Sachs, each week of the shutdown would cost 0.2 points to GDP in the fourth quarter.

Tourism. Statue of Liberty and iconic parks Yosemite and Yellowstone would close.
