The president of the Chamber of Commerce of La Libertad (CCLL), Alfonso Medrano Samamé, regretted that the high crime rates in the region have affected 35% of the tourism sector and, given this, there is no effective strategy to combat crime in its various modalities.
Precisely, in response to the insistent call from the provincial and district mayors to restore the state of emergency in La Libertad, Medrano expressed his concern because the implementation of this state of exception must come accompanied by a budget and a plan that decisively hits criminal organizations and gangs. “In addition to the negative impact on the well-being of the population, there is a serious impact that crime is causing on the economic development of our region. Sectors such as tourism have experienced a decrease in income of up to 35% due to the perception of insecurity,” said Medrano Samamé.
He added that small and medium businesses are forced to pay fees to extortionists, including hardware stores, warehouses, pharmacies and hotels, which is completely unacceptable. “As for the mining industry, the main contributor to the regional and national domestic product, there is concern in this sector about illegal mining and the lack of security that makes it difficult for formal mining to carry out its normal operation,” he indicated.
This panorama shows the lack of an effective strategy to address this disturbing situation. “The most important thing is not to limit ourselves only to imposing states of emergency without a solid strategic plan, especially in a context where legislative powers have been granted regarding citizen security. It is essential that the government acts more effectively,” said Medrano Samamé.
