Sales of new vehicles in Peru exceeded pre-pandemic levels in November

The Automotive Association of Peru (AAP) reported that a total of 142,464 new light vehicles were sold between January and November 2021, a figure higher by 43.1% compared to the same period in 2020 and by 3.5% compared to the result registered in the same period of 2019.

According to the organization, 15,879 cars in this category were marketed in November alone, including trucks, pick-ups, vans, station wagons, SUVs and off-road vehicles.

“This expansion would respond to the recovery of formal employment, as well as people’s income, two elements that allow to boost consumption. However, they are not the only ones, since the use of families’ private savings should also be considered, ”said Alberto Morisaki, Manager of Economic Studies at the AAP.

In the disaggregated, the sale of cars and station wagon totaled 41,550 units in the first eleven months of the year, a number 25% higher compared to the same period of 2020, although lower by 19.6% compared to 2019, according to Sunarp figures.

Meanwhile, accumulated sales of SUVs reached 56,786 units in the analysis period (+ 64.1% vs. 2020, + 27.1% vs. 2019), those of pickups and vans stood at 26,820 units (+ 50% vs. 2020, + 30.8% vs. 2019), while pickup trucks totaled 17,308 units (+ 24.9% vs. 2020, -16.6% vs. 2019).

“There is also the effort of the concession companies to boost the level of sales through the offer of vehicles and commercial campaigns that encourage the acquisition of said units,” said the specialist.

AAP: mining buys heavy vehicles

For its part, sale of trucks and tractors reached 1,546 units last November, while during the first eleven months of this year 14,350 units were sold, which means an advance of 47.4% and 27.5% compared to the same period of 2020 and 2019, respectively. .

“The progress shown by this class of vehicles has been driven by the significant dynamism of the various economic sectors. Activities such as mining, construction, trade, agribusiness, among others, that use trucks and / or tractors in their production chain, have been registering significant growth rates, which is why they demand the aforementioned vehicles to a greater extent.”, Specifies the report.

In contrast, the sale of minibus and buses during the eleventh month of this year reached 220 units, which led to a total of 1,767 units in accumulated sales in the January-November period, 7.8% lower than in the same period. of 2020 and lower by 55.5% compared to 2019.

“Urban and interprovincial transport have not yet managed to return to the dynamism observed prior to the viral outbreak, which has decreased the demand for these vehicles. Other activities that are linked to its use, such as tourism and entertainment, have not returned to their pre-pandemic levels, ”he continues.

AAP: sale of motorcycles and trimotos

Meanwhile, the sale of smaller vehicles (motorcycles and trimotos) registered 33,384 units last November, while during the first eleven months of 2021, the total totaled 393,819 units, exceeding by 54.8% what was observed in the same period last year and higher by 49.2% compared to 2019. The sale of motorcycles increased to 270,809 units between January and November 2021 (+ 56.5% vs. 2020, + 75.3% vs. 2019).

Finally, the sale of trimotos rose to 123,010 units between January and November of this year (+ 51.3% vs. 2020, + 12.5% ​​vs. 2019), influenced by the increase in demand for these vehicles used as tools of work.

“Motorcycles are a safe means of personal transport, which allows maintaining the social distancing required in the current context, and, in addition, they are a work tool with low investment cost, used mainly in home delivery services, activity which has grown significantly, particularly in the restaurant and pharmacy sectors ”, Morisaki sent.
