Julio Velarde: lemon price would have reached its highest level in September

The president of the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP), Julio Velardeestimated this morning that the price of lemon would reach its highest level in September and would begin to decline from October.

According to the forecasts made by the BCRP, lemon during this month would reach an average price of S/15.7 per kilogram. While during October it would be around S/15.10, after which it would fall to S/9.40 in November and S/6.58 in December. “We have put for comparison purposes what happened in 2017, in 2017 it rose to S / 14.5 per kilo and fell to S / 3.6 in December,” he said. Furthermore, he stressed that the current rise is a temporary factor.

Likewise, Velarde commented that due to the great shortage in supply, it is possible that contraband lemons are currently circulating in the local market. “When there is such a big difference it is very difficult to have very good border control,” he said.

On the other hand, the president of the BCRP highlighted that food and due inflation is growing around 10%. “That affects the poorest who have a larger food component in their basket,” he mentioned.
