Mincetur: Domestic tourism would grow 25% this year

Inbound tourism during 2023 would experience a growth of 10%. This would occur despite the challenges associated with social conflict and the climatic phenomena at the beginning of the year, according to Juan Carlos Mathews, head of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur).

“Before the pandemic we registered receptive tourism between 4.3 million and 4.4 million tourists. Then it decreased to 800,000 with the pandemic and there was a recovery that reached two million tourists last year. Taking that basis into account, we hope to reach 2.2 million international tourists this year, which will mean an increase of 10%,” he said yesterday during a press conference.

However, the official stressed that this is a smaller expansion than initially planned. “We must specify that this is a year that began with protests, dengue, Hurricane Yaku, the migratory crisis, that is, very difficult circumstances, and, even so, we will register an expansion,” he highlighted.

the minister Mathews He also indicated that domestic tourism would grow around 25% during 2023. He estimated that the number of trips will go from 27 million registered last year to 35 million until December.

Foreign trade with figures in blue

On the other hand, regarding foreign trade, the official was optimistic and asserted that there is a possibility that exports will close with positive figures this year.

“It would be good news (for exports) to close in blue. The non-traditional part is likely to grow around 1%”, he stated.

Finally, he added that traditional shipments abroad will fall due to various international and local factors. Among them, the low prices of commodities and the decline in fishmeal shipments due to the low anchovy, horse mackerel and mackerel campaign.
