MTPE will draw up registers to identify the self-employed

Arturo García, director of Employment Promotion and Self-employment of the MTPE, said yesterday that his portfolio will work on the creation of a registry that allows identifying the vulnerable self-employed population.

During the presentation of the study Covid-19 crisis and informal economy in Lima, organized by Wiego, García acknowledged that currently there are no standards for self-employed workers, and for the delivery of bonuses, the best data was obtained from the Comprehensive Health System (SIS).

“However, there is information that is somewhat out of date, so we need to work a standard for this target population,” he said.

Likewise, the official announced that the WiñayWarmi Multisectoral Group for Women will discuss the delivery of loans to self-employed women and to expand formalization.

Unraveling informality

Wiego detailed that as of June of this year, 58% of households headed by an informal worker in Metropolitan Lima were affected by hunger, and 84% even reported having missed a meal of the day during the last month due to the lack of means.

To survive, 59% borrowed from informal sources and 52% fell behind on rent and service payments.

In addition, the universe of informal workers who received a bonus increased from 50 to 60%, added to the fact that 37% claimed to receive the benefit of the extension or fractioning of the payment of the electricity service.

It is worth mentioning that Wiego carried out an interpretive survey of 210 workers from four sectors: street traders, domestic workers, newspaper vendors (canillitas), and solid waste recyclers.

“The fall in clients, employers, sales and increased competition have marked the return to work,” said Carmen Roca, Wiego representative in Peru.
