Solar Energy in Peru would generate an investment of more than US $ 1.4 million

The development of solar energy projects in Peru would generate an investment of US $ 1,470 until 2030. The industry would also produce 7,350 direct jobs, according to Paloma Sarria, executive director of the Peruvian Renewable Energy Association.

“Peru has world-class energy resources: solar and geothermal in the south, wind power in the center and north, mini-hydro plants throughout Peru, between 2,000 and 3,000 meters above sea level. And through the deployment of these Non-Conventional Renewable Energies (NCRE), decentralized development and access to energy can be achieved for isolated populations ”, highlighted Sarria.

Challenges for renewable energy in Peru

The first challenge is related to the approval of the Distributed Generation Regulation in Peru that has been pending since 2018. “The proposed regulation presents two regimes: the medium distributed generation (MGD) and the micro distributed generation (MCD) ”Explains Sarria.

“Another challenge is to develop a market for complementary services that includes supply and demand participants, and the creation of a regulatory framework for the entry of storage systems. In addition to promoting the decarbonization of other industries such as transportation (air, maritime, land), petrochemicals and steel with NCRE through electric mobility and green hydrogen ”, he adds.

In this regard, it indicates that according to studies carried out by the IDB for MINAM, and by Deloitte for ENEL, the cost of decarbonization by 2050 is calculated in US$ 93 millones. However, returns are estimated at more than 50%, which demonstrate high profitability.
