Spending of national tourists rose S/150 in the last 5 years

Although the arrival of foreign tourists to Peru is very important, since each visitor spends an average of US$1,025 —in the first quarter— during their stay, according to Comex Perunational travelers are key to the reactivation of this sector after the pandemic, since they take about a month to plan their trips.

“Now there are campaigns abroad, but planning a trip for a international tourist It takes longer, it is not an immediate response. Unlike National tourism, that his average planning time is one month. Precisely we have appealed to mobilize this group, which is the one that is going to reactivate tourism in general ”, he explains Lucrecia LaforaDeputy Director of Internal Tourism Promotion of Promperú, in dialogue with La República.

Progressive increase in spending

In the last five years, the spending of Peruvians when traveling has increased by S/150, that is, if before it was S/350, today it reaches S/500. Long weekends due to holidays are motivating people to go out and do activities outside of the routine. For the Promperú executive, although we have not yet reached the pre-pandemic figures, we are on that path.

Another encouraging indicator is that the hiring of formal tour operators is increasing. Five years ago, only 8% contracted these services, today it reaches 15%. Although this percentage is still low because Peruvians often travel to regions where they have families and friends that can host them, the trend is changing.

“It has to do, in most cases, with groups of friends or families who do not want to take risks in their transfers, but prefer something more planned and safe, and the tour operators They guarantee that, in addition to knowing what they were offered”, explains Lafora.

reactivating strategies

“And what are your plans?” It is a platform that promotes the entity and brings together in one place the formal offer of 300 companies in the tourism sector. Likewise, this year three gastronomic fairs are being organized: Peru Mucho Gusto in Tumbes, Tacna and Lima, in order to attract local and border tourism, considering that Chile and Ecuador are the countries that issue the most visitors to our country.

“At Promperú we have a strategy of reactivation of the regional economy. And in this sense, what we are looking for is to link the gastronomic theme, which is a good travel motivator, with the tourist theme. Gastronomy and tourism are super powerful to dynamize regional economies, to generate benefits for small businesses and generate employment,” said Angélica Matsuda, executive president of this entity.
