Indecopi will promote national air policy that eliminates bureaucratic barriers, announces Palacín

The National Institute for the Defense of Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi) will put on the agenda for 2022 a national air policy that guarantees the defense of consumers, according to Julián Palacín, president of the institution.

In this regard, he pointed out that this “will be achieved with the promotion of free competition in the airport market and the elimination of bureaucratic barriers that make services more expensive and put the country at a disadvantage compared to other airports in Latin America.”

Palacín also stated that together with the actors involved, they will develop studies to identify the anti-competitive practices (monopolies, oligopolies, among others) that prevent attracting national and foreign private investment, such as low-cost, low-cost airlines that would serve Peruvians. who live in the Amazon regions, the center of the country or border areas.

Along the same lines, the president of Indecopi indicated that in the interior of the country “citizens do not have air services or are insufficiently served, despite the fact that there are thousands of stopped aircraft in the world.”

“We have not had the ability to get them to trust Peru and invest so that in a system of free competition they can meet our needs for air transport, safe, efficient and economical,” he added.

Elimination of bureaucratic barriers

Regarding the elimination of bureaucratic barriers, the executive president of Indecopi explained that studies on figures and trends in the airport market show that there are a series of demands, requirements, and charges established by the General Directorate of Civil Aeronautics (DGAC) the Ministry of Transport and commercial airport operators, which hinder the maintenance and development of private aviation companies in the domestic market.

For example, he cited that in Peru, landing a small aircraft at Jorge Chávez International Airport costs 15 times more than at Miami Airport, United States, in the latter for the same service only US $ 24.30 is paid. Added to this is the lack of infrastructure and other basic services at provincial airports. All of this affects domestic passengers, who come to pay more for domestic flights than for international ones.

Finally, the authority highlighted that Indecopi must have its representative on the board of the Peruvian Corporation of Airports and Commercial Aviation (Corpac), and thus guarantee the rights of consumers.
