Quavii: gas distributor refuses to increase volumes for electricity generation

Quaviiresponsible for the massification of natural gas in the north of the country, considered that the proposal presented by the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) to prioritize the supply of this energy for electricity generation in the event of an El Niño phenomenon “could put at risk the continuity of the public natural gas service to more than 1 million Peruvians” in 7 regions in the north and south of the country.

The regulatory project contemplates that, if a situation occurs that makes the normal operation of the National Electric System (SEIN) more expensive or difficult, as is the case of the reduction of water resources for electricity generation, the supply of natural gas destined for export, which is processed in Pampa Melchorita.

“In this sense, the approval of the supreme decree could affect the citizens of Trujillo, Chiclayo, Chimbote, Cajamarca, Huaraz and other cities that also depend on the supply of liquefied natural gas from Pampa Melchorita, which needs a minimum volume of natural gas to operate, which would not be reached by the proposed rationing,” the company said in a statement.

For Quavii, only in the northern regions, nearly 230,000 clients of the public natural gas service would be affected, with negative consequences for families, entrepreneurs, CNG users and industries that depend on this supply.

“Quavii asks the authorities to reconsider the approval of the regulatory project and evaluate other alternatives with a greater analysis of the regulatory impact and to analyze the risks of a regulation that apparently seeks to prevent the shortage of a service, but that would negatively affect the security and supply of natural gas for thousands of other Peruvians,” he sent.

Quavii is the brand of Gases del Pacífico and Gases del Norte del Perú, which are part of the portfolio of companies of the Colombian Promigas in our country. The natural gas that comes out of Pampa Melchorita, in Ica, is then transported by truck to both the north and the south of the country.
