The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) reported today, July 21, that the States of Japan, Hungary, the Netherlands, and Canada have shown their interest in participating in the execution of the third stage of the Chavimochic project, through the State-to-State contracting process (G2G).
The institution remarked that, through General Secretariat Resolution No. 0078-2023-MIDAGRI-SG, the following group was established: ‘Technical Committee in charge of evaluating and selecting the foreign State that will be responsible for the provision of goods and/or services; execution of works, as well as the management, development or operation of projects that are required by the entity within the framework of the provisions of General Directive DI no. 010-2023-MIDAGRI/OGA-OA’.
It is important to remember that on June 13 at the Foreign Ministry, the international call for the award process of the Chavimochic III stage project was officially launched.
During that work meeting, the Minister of Agrarian Development and Irrigation, Nelly Paredes, announced the process to encourage the manifestation of expressions of interest towards the Chavimochic Third Stage project by the States invited through their embassies.
Minister Paredes reaffirmed the commitment to unlock the Chavimochic III project with the aim of promoting job creation in the agricultural sector and increasing agricultural exports to international markets, noting that agriculture is the second largest generator of foreign exchange in the country, with sales of more than US$10,000 million last year.
What is Chavimochic III?
The Chavimochic III project aims to incorporate 63,000 new hectares of land and improve irrigation conditions in another 48,000 hectares, which would generate more than 150,000 new jobs.
In addition, it seeks to supply drinking water to the population of Trujillo and meet the irrigation demands of 144,385 hectares in the Chao, VirĂº, Moche and Chicama valleys using the water potential of the Santa River.
This project represents a series of social benefits: it includes an increase in foreign exchange of US$1.3 billion and a private investment of US$450 million. This will have a positive economic impact not only in La Libertad, but also in the agricultural development of the northern macro-region of the country.
