Grilled Chicken Day: poultry shops aim to reach 60% of sales prior to the pandemic

He Grilled Chicken Day, which will be held next Sunday, July 16, is, even surpassing Mother’s Day, the date with the highest demand of the year for this iconic dish of Peruvian gastronomy, according to Wilmer Olaya, marketing manager of Pio’s Chicken.

According to the spokesperson for the poultry chain, the expectations for this date are very high; however, sales are expected to be lower than in years prior to COVID-19.

“Before the pandemic, we sold 1,000 chickens that day. For now, we hope to reach at least 60% of that number,” he told The Republic. In addition, he added that the average ticket per person, which used to range between S/46 and S/48, is also expected to be lower this year.

He also pointed out that no promotions or reservations are planned for this date, since a massive influx of customers is expected.

Delivery consumption would grow by up to 80%

According to Rappi, this year it is expected that the poultry sales will increase up to 80% compared to a regular day, thanks to the orders placed through the application.

According to Stefano Delfino, Head of Restaurants for Rappi, this date will also boost the sale of accessories, such as French fries, salads, soft drinks and sauces such as chili or mayonnaise.

In addition, Delfino explained that, in Peru, the cities that most request this dish through the application are Lima, Arequipa, Trujillo and Piura, especially during the weekend. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays are the days when the most orders are made through the application, with an average ticket of approximately S/75.

More than 150 million grilled chickens per year

For its part, the Peruvian Poultry Association (APA) highlighted that more than 150 million chickens per year are used to prepare grilled chicken, which is equivalent to 20% of annual production in the poultry sector. He also indicated that there are more than 13,000 grilled chicken restaurants nationwide.

“This flagship dish is also very relevant because it promotes the production and consumption of Peruvian potatoes, vegetables, chicha morada; agricultural products that are part of the success story of grilled chicken,” the union highlighted.

Finally, he commented that, as part of this celebration and throughout July, the most important grilled chicken restaurants in Peru, with the support of Peruvian poultry companies, will deliver more than 5,000 grilled chicken dishes to vulnerable populations. and Peruvians who work in institutions that have a key role in the health and safety of the population.
