Senasa prohibits the use of chlorpyrifos in pesticides: what does the resolution say?
The resolution formalizes the ban on “use, commercialization, storage, distribution and packaging of the 83 registered pesticides based on chlorpyrifos”. However, this will take place completely as of August 1, 2024. Meanwhile, Senasa is implementing a work plan to be able to timely withdraw these products from the market.
These insecticides are made from chlorpyrifos and serve to control agricultural pests; however, they have been banned in Latin American countries such as Argentina, Chile and Colombia, in addition to the United States and other countries of the European Union. This is due to the risks they pose to people and the environment.
Why are chlorpyrifos banned in pesticides?
According to the resolution of the Senasa, Said compound is considered a potential persistent organic pollutant, therefore it has a high alert level with respect to the environment. In fact, it is toxic to human health.
“Highly toxic if swallowed, suspected cardiovascular and blood toxic, with reproductive/developmental effects, inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase and neurotoxic. Some studies indicate that there is a relationship between the metabolites of chlorpyrifos and learning difficulties in children,” the resolution highlights and warns.
