The Punta Lomitas wind power plant, the largest in Peru today, was officially inaugurated this Tuesday by the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem), in a ceremony in which the minister Oscar Vera Gargurevich brought forward the start-up of two other generation projects with a joint capacity of almost 1,000 MW.
Punta Lomitasbuilt and operated by the Engie group in Ocucaje, Ica, has a capacity of 260 MW that is supported with an additional 36.4 MW from its expansion already built and soon to also enter into commercial operation.
Designed to feed the National Interconnected Electric System (SEIN) after the entry of the energy demand of Quellaveco, from Anglo American, had an investment of US$300 million financed by the IDB and without any type of auction or subsidy.
With this, Punta Lomitas not only turns quallaveco the first large mining company to promote the use of 100% green energy, but it will contribute significantly to raising the share of Non-Conventional Renewable Energies (NCRE) in the Peruvian matrix.
more investment arrives
In dialogue with La República, Minister Vera assured that this is not the only large-scale energy project underway, since there will be two more even larger wind farms in Piura and Lambayeque next year.

It’s all about the projects quercus and Violeteach with a capacity of 450 MW, whose temporary concessions were delivered to Ignis Energy Peru in October 2022.
“This is a sample of the changes that energy security guarantees us. We are walking in this aspect hand in hand with private investment and we must be happy that the private trust that Peru is a country to invest“said the minister.
In this sense, he also ruled out that generation costs could increase from 2024 —as COES warned— due to a greater demand that would force more diesel to be burned.
“To invest, you must be sure that you are going to have stability, that the country gives you confidence, that your investment is not going to be affected by inflationary issues, issues of economic mismanagement. So, the positive environment is because there is stability “, he added.
Guarantee in investments, also understood by the French ambassador, Marc Giacomini, who maintained that this joint work with the local authorities is carried out through “a very long-term strategy”. The French State is a shareholder of Engie.
“There are many French companies that invest in the Peru and they plan to continue to do so. A proud accompaniment in projects in all its sectors: infrastructure, health, energy, tourism,” he said.
Less emissions by 2030
By 2030, the Peru has the goal of reducing its emissions by 30% of gases greenhouse effect. The income from the production of wind energy in Punta Lomitas, operated by Engie, is equivalent to some 50,000 gasoline-powered vehicles that stop circulating per year.
