INEI: 2 out of 10 young people who live in Peru neither study nor work

The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) revealed that, during 2022, 18.2% of young people between the ages of 15 and 29 neither study nor work (nini) in Peru, which is made up of both people unemployed as inactive.

In other words, 2 out of 10 young Peruvians are considered the nini population, according to the results of the National Household Survey (ENAHO 2022).

According to calculations by the Lima Chamber of Commerce (CCL), there are close to 1.5 million young people who neither study nor work, which is worrying because this figure is located above the historical average nationwide that stood at 1.3 million people in this condition.

In detail, the Institute of Economics and Business Development (iedep) of the CCL specified that the nini condition is mostly present in women (61.2%) and this responds to the fact that they are mothers at an early age and must take care of their youngest child. In addition, 31.2% of the nini population is poor.

Faced with this not very encouraging scenario, the Iedep urged the Executive Branch to redouble its efforts so that it can recover economic growth at rates greater than 5%, since only in this way can the necessary adequate employment be generated to help absorb a large part of the 1 .5 million ninis to the EAP, as well as to reduce monetary poverty.

The other side of the coin

The INEI report also revealed that of the total number of young people between the ages of 15 and 29 living in Peru, 48.6% are only working and 22.7% are only studying. Meanwhile he 10.5% are studying and working at once.

Between March and May of this year, the employed population under 25 years of age decreased by 11.3%; that is, there are 94,600 youth jobs less than in the same quarter of 2022.

Meanwhile, the average monthly income from work for young people is S/1,175.9 (+11.1%).
