Minister of Labor: “We are preparing a bill to regularize holidays”

The head of the Ministry of Labor and Employment Promotion (MTPE), Fernando Varela Bohórquez, pointed out that having 16 holidays is unfavorable for the country’s productivity, since, in the last weeks, the Congress of the Republic approved two new national holidays. In this sense, he informed that, from the Executive, they would propose a bill to regularize them.

“We are preparing a bill to regularize the establishment of holidays,” he announced during an interview on Channel N.

The new holidays that were recently added are the June 7thin commemoration of the battle of Arica and Flag Day, and the July 23th, for the heroic sacrifice of FAP captain José Abelardo Quiñones Gonzales. Both were approved by Congress, despite the fact that they did not have a favorable opinion from the Executive.

On the other hand, he reiterated that on July 13 the National Council for Labor and Employment Promotion (CNTPE) will be reinstated as a result of having strengthened social dialogue through bilateral roundtables; besides, He added that it is important to resume the momentum of a Labor Code, since labor law in the country is quite dispersed.

“Another of the issues that the CNTPE must address is how to technify the increase in the minimum vital remuneration (RMV). The idea is that this time we talk and do not get up from the table until we make decisions,” he said.
