National Labor Council will be installed on July 13: minimum wage increase among the agenda items

The head of the Ministry of Labor and Employment Promotion (MTPE), Fernando Varela, reported that next Thursday, July 13, the National Labor Council (CNT)in which it is expected to discuss items on the agenda such as the increase in the minimum vital remuneration (RMV), currently located at S / 1,025.

“On July 13 we are going to reinstate the CNT. In the first 100 days of my administration, we have set up eight bilateral work groups, four with the union centrals and four with the business associations“, he declared after the inauguration of a Labor mega-fair carried out in the district of La Victoria.

In this regard, he indicated that the day before they held meetings with the trade union centrals and business associations with the objective that these groups choose their coordinator in advance.

“They generously have confirmed their participation in the CNT, are interested in promoting social dialogue (…) With this, we will be able to reinstate this very important space for dialogue, in which we will be able to seat the most important actors in the working market”, he claimed.

“As soon as this work space is reinstated, the greatest effort is to leave a concrete and permanent result so that the actors know what the procedures are to be able to talk about increases later,” he commented.

“Increase in the minimum wage must be technical”

Let us remember that, a few weeks ago, Minister Varela assured that the increase in the minimum wage will be placed as a main item on the agenda in the National Labor Council, which must be subject to technical criteria.

“What is being evaluated is that it be analyzed through the National Labor Council, which is the most important organ of debate, that for the first time its increase is technical. Let it be debated in a supreme decree when is the opportunity and what are the economic factors to be able to increase ”, he pointed out at that moment.

Minimum wage: how much do labor unions propose to increase?

On May 1, at a press conference, the General Confederation of Workers of Peru (CGTP), Through its general secretary, Gerónimo López Sevillano, he maintained that they will propose to the Government an increase in the minimum wage to S/2,500.

“The minimum wage now, to compensate for the cost of living, must be at least between S/2,500 and S/3,000. It is what we have been demanding for many years,” said the union representative.

For his part, the posture of the Unitary Confederation of Workers of Peru (CUT), through its president, Julio Bazán, pointed out the need for the president to Dina Boluarte respond to the popular clamor to raise the minimum wage in Peru and to reach S/1,600, which “can occur progressively”.
