Bonus or gratuity?: discover the difference and avoid confusion

In the workplace, it is common for people to confuse the terms bonus and bonus, which can lead to misunderstandings and wrong expectations. In order to clarify this confusion, it is important to understand that there are differences between both concepts, since they vary due to the sector in which the worker works.

In Peru, December and July are months that thousands of workers look forward to, since it is very common to receive extra income. This is because public and private entities pay an additional amount to their workers. Some know it as a bonus, but others as a bonus.

The main difference between the two is that the bonus is received by private sector employees who are on the payroll. This is awarded the months of July and December and represents full compensation, as long as the individual has worked the full semester. Otherwise, only a reduced fraction of the total will be given to you.

However, those who maintain a contract with a microenterprise are not entitled to receive a bonus, as stipulated in the Article 8 of Law No. 27735.

For its part, the Christmas bonus is a legal benefit granted to public sector employees and is equivalent to a extra amount of 300 soles. This benefit, as in the gratuity, is delivered two months per year and must be deposited together with the salary.

The beneficiaries of this amount also include university professors, health personnel, permanent and eventual collaborators of the public sector, personnel of the Armed Forces and the National Police of Peru, as well as pensioners in charge of the State included in the pension schemes. Laws No. 15117, No. 19846, No. 20530 and No. 28091.
