Annualized inflation fell in June to 6.46% in Metropolitan Lima, the lowest in 18 months

The annualized inflation in Metropolitan Lima it fell to 6.46% in June 2023, a cut of 0.15% that places it as the lowest in 18 months, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI).

This is the first setback in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) so far this year, after the 1.25% peak registered in March after a first quarter full of social unrest and natural disasters. The monthly variation is also the lowest in 36 months.

In the months of April and May, inflation in Metropolitan Lima was 0.56% and 0.32%, respectively. The cumulative advance so far in 2023 is 2.52%.

The Economist Juan Carlos Odar He maintained that inflation in June “has been lower than expected.” He pointed out that the index has somewhat attenuated inflationary pressure and probably “involves a downward revision of agents’ inflationary expectations.”

“It is good data, although it remains to be seen whether the composition of the drop. If it is basically due to food, we would be seeing a reaction from the previous months. But it would also be necessary to see if there is an additional component that could show a weakness in the demand”, indicated the specialist from Phase Consultores.

It should be noted that this decline in inflation in June is in line with what was previously said by the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF)which expected a progressive fall in consumer prices in the second half of 2023.
