Shortly after the beginning of the sugarcane harvest on the Ecuadorian coast, there is concern in the sugar industry sector about the impact that the El Niño phenomenon could have on sugar production, although sugar factories, such as San Carlos, admitted that “The expansion of Ozimnica, of course, symbolizes significant losses and halts in production, because it was not yet possible to start the harvest this year.”

Traditionally, the harvest season starts in June every year, but to date it has not yet started. Meanwhile, according to San Carlos, these production and harvest delays are affecting all players in the industry in the short term.

The new cane price that ‘sweetens’ the producers represents an additional cost to the industry of 9.5 million dollars per year

For this reason, the mill analyzed the possible risks that could affect the processes of production, harvesting and agricultural infrastructure in the future and prepared plans for unforeseen situations such as: cleaning the mouth and main drainage channels, changing the cultivation and harvesting program and monitoring pumping stations, dams and bridges.

The company reminded that the El Niño phenomenon is known for its variability and that it is difficult to make precise projections, as it can have different intensities and effects in different regions. However, by exchanging opinions and taking as a reference what happened from 1997 to 1998, reviewing historical meteorological data and current climate trends, it could be concluded that there is a high probability of precipitation during the last quarter of the year.

Problems with the beginning of the harvest and delays in production are also on the alert for some supermarkets, which in recent days have limited the amount of sugar that customers can buy individually.

On the other hand, the Valdez Sugar Company announced the beginning of the harvest in the coming days and on Friday, June 23, began testing and adjusting the operation of its equipment and boilers.

“It is important to clarify that these activities do not represent risks for the community and its health, they are processes controlled by different departments of the company.
