Nelly Paredes del Castillo, holder of the portfolio of Agrarian Development and Irrigationinformed that for the following agricultural campaign 2023-2024 will implement a new Catastrophic Agricultural Insurance (SAC), which will have adjustments compared to the insurance of previous campaigns, in order to provide more direct and effective support to producers affected by climatic phenomena and whose crops have been damaged.
“For the next agricultural campaign, vWe are going to have a new Agricultural Insurance that will take into account the possible effects of an El Niño phenomenon, such as intense rains in the north and droughts in the south); We will take out a new insurance that will have adjustments to make it more beneficial for small farmers in the countryside,” said Paredes.
Currently, the SAC is a free insurance funded by the State and that provides coverage to farmers in vulnerable situations, especially in those places where crops have been devastated by natural events. For this, the State has allocated S/80 million in the current agricultural campaign that ends in August.
Paredes also pointed out that measures will be implemented to face the ravages of the El Niño phenomenon (FEN) and reduce the impacts of the climatic event, especially in the agricultural sector.
Along these lines, the Executive approved last week Emergency Decree No. 015-2023, which transfers S/975.8 million to Midagri for the execution of actions in the face of the danger of rainfall and the presence of a FEN. The provinces that will benefit are Ancash, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Lima, Piura, Tumbes and Ica, declared a State of Emergency due to the possibility of heavy rains.
In detail, the cleaning of rivers and streams will have a budget of S/575 million assigned to act in 518 critical points, previously identified by the National Water Authority (ANA).
“El Niño is a natural phenomenon that could always occur in the country, it could be every two years or every five years; For this reason, from 2017 to date, no prevention work was carried out to deal with climatic events. For this reason, from Midagri we are going to start with the cleaning and clearing of rivers and streams”, said the head of Midagri.
In addition, it has been announced that an investment of S/ 247 million has been authorized for the purchase of heavy machinery such as caterpillar tractors, hydraulic excavators, front-end loaders and others, to carry out cleaning work in riverbeds and streams. “With the heavy machinery, we will be able to clear rivers and have a modern park of equipment to work for up to the next ten years,” added Paredes.
