The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) detailed that, during 2022, 8 million 561,900 Peruvians are subject to underemployment, either for working less than 35 hours a week or for receiving less than the average.
By sex, underemployment covers 55.7% of women, especially in urban areas (70.3%). And by age range, one in five underemployed is between 14 and 24 years old.
“In other words, underemployment is mostly female, lives in cities and a significant percentage is young,” commented Dante Carhuavilca, head of INEI, in the presentation of the Permanent National Employment Survey (EPEN-2022).
Besides, Of the 847,800 Peruvians who are looking for work and cannot find it —that is, the unemployed— there is also a greater female presence, with 55.3%compared to 44.7% of the remaining men.
Nubie Chávez, general director of the General Directorate for Employment Promotion of the MTPE, believes that the EPEN will allow not only the traditional indicators to be reviewed, but also to analyze new angles to close gender gaps.
“We have observed the results, and jobs must be improved and promoted for this vulnerable population of women in poverty. It is important to have the information at hand to follow up on our indicators,” she noted.
