Unemployment rate fell almost one point in the last year, according to INEC figures

The unemployment rate in Ecuador fell almost one point between August 2021 and August of this year, according to the National Survey of Employment, Unemployment and Underemployment (Enemdu) prepared by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC). It went from 4.9% to 4.0%.

In August 2021 there were 415,041 unemployed people; as of the same month this year, the figure is 343,235, that is, there was a decrease. However, there is a certain increase compared to July of this year, when there were 332,227 people without work.

According to the INEC, the unemployment rate in the urban area fell from 6.2% to 5.2% between August 2021 and the same month in 2022. Which, for the institution, is a “statistically significant difference.” While in the rural area, in the same period, it went from 2.2% to 1.8%.

In August 2022, the unemployment rate stood at 4.7% for women and 3.5% for men.

The adequate employment index went, in the same period, from 32.4% to 33.3%; and that of underemployment, from 22.1% to 23.1%.

The INEC reports that in August 2021 there were 2,770,656 people with adequate employment. In August 2022 the figure rose to 2,844,726.

Likewise, in August 2022, the adequate/full employment rate stood at 38.7% for men and 26.1% for women. (YO)
