According to the latest report submitted by the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF), Latin America is the region with the highest income inequality in the world, a condition that has been maintained for 30 years.
“The lack of access to human capital formation, quality jobs and financial inclusion are key factors that perpetuate inequality between generations in Latin America and the Caribbean,” CAF said in a statement, in which it also highlighted that the “family origin” is one of the fundamental elements for a person’s progress options.
In detail, in the report “Inherited inequalities: the role of skills, employment and wealth in the opportunities of the new generations”, it is explained that 30% of Latin American youth share the same occupational position as their parents.
Janl Peru, the percentage of professional stagnation rises to 35%, one of the largest in the world, according to Dolores de la Mata, CAF economist.
lack of access
The report also states that, due to social differences and the little education received in their first years of life, citizens have fewer job skills, which worsens their future working conditions.
“The gaps are deepening and are evident in lower salaries and other labor results,” indicated the study, which concludes that Employment opportunities are not the same for people with the same educational level, but coming from different socioeconomic and family backgrounds.
For her part, VerĂ³nica Frisancho, CAF’s Knowledge Manager, highlighted that the gender gaps in educational mobility have been reversed over time and are now in favor of women, especially in university education.
Likewise, he specified that these changes are necessary for greater social mobility, but they are not enough to alter the possibilities of labor advancement between men and women in the Latin American region.
