Cayetana Aljovín: “Yes, we are going to be able to have a first anchovy fishing season”

For the National Fisheries Society (SNP), the possibility that there will not be the first industrial fishing season for anchovy in the country is not yet closed, despite the announcement made by the Ministry of Production (Produce). In addition, the president of the union, Cayetana Aljovinexplained that in the five days that the exploratory fishing officially lasted 40,000 metric tons (MT) of anchovy were landed in totalwhich were captured by the steel and timber fleet, and which ended up being converted into around 10,000 MT of flour.

“I think we will be able to fish for a month or a month, but it will be possible to fish, because the anchovy is there and it is grown. That is what we all estimate, that we are still going to be able to have a first season, short, very short, surely, and then a second season in November,” said Aljovín.

Although the owner of Produce, Raul Perez Reyesalso affirmed that she would convene the industry to talk about the measures that they could implement together to help the affected workers in this sector who will see their income reduced, the president of the SNP confirmed to this medium that there was no such contact yet on that issue.

“We believe that there will be a fishing season, that is, we have not put ourselves in that scenario (that there is no season), and the minister has not called us and has not summoned us for any meeting. We understand that he is precisely thinking about doing that research and that there is a season, and with that the workers will also benefit,” explained to The Republic.

During exploratory fishing, a total of 40,000 MT of anchovy was obtained, according to the SNP

The exploratory fishing authorized by Produce was from June 3 to 7. As a result, 40,000 MT of anchovy was obtained, of which between 50% and 60% were juveniles, according to the SNP, although unofficial reports indicate that the incidence was greater than 80%. The total captured, both by steel and wooden boats, were directed to flour. It should be noted that 40,000 MT is what is caught on average in one day during a regular fishing season.

The union noted that the industrial fleet took immediate action to protect the juvenile resource. After verifying a high incidence of juvenile specimens, the companies associated with the SNP decided to end the fishing effort while waiting for better oceanographic conditions that allow the regrouping of the adult shoal in the coming weeks.
