Peru-China FTA: they will optimize the e-commerce agreement

The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) reported that, after the pandemic, the dialogue with China was successfully resumed forto optimize the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between both countries.

Teresa Mera, Vice Minister of Foreign Trade, said that “substantial progress was made” to conclude this process. The next meeting will be in Lima between August and September.

Where does the readjustment of the FTA point? They seek to “maximize the benefits” of the treaty with China by modernizing its chapters, as well as including others linked to rules of origin, customs procedures and trade facilitation, investment, trade in services, electronic commerce and intellectual property.

There are five rounds of negotiations so far, in a context in which the FTA with the Asian power has been 13 years old.

It is worth noting that China is Peru’s main trading partner in the last nine years. In 2022, US$34,816 million were moved, the most exported products being gold and tin. In addition, agricultural shipments totaled US$298 million, a record figure in the field thanks to blueberries, grapes, avocados and mangoes.
