They neither study nor work: La Libertad, Piura and Arequipa lead the regional statistics of young ninis

Ninis is a popularized term to call young people who neither study nor work. In our country, the National Household Survey (Enaho)from INEI, reported that there is almost 1.5 million people between 15 and 29 years that fall into this categorization. As expected, Lima is the region with the highest number of ninis: 46.3%.

La Libertad (6.7%), Piura (5.2%) and Arequipa (4.6%), in that order, they follow the department of Lima. The first northern region is home to 99,437 ninis; the second, 77,175; and the third, 68,270.

This same statistic in 2022 realized that the majority only managed to complete their secondary education. “This characteristic (…) coincides in the regions with the largest nini population: Lima (470,000), La Libertad (61,000), Piura (52,000), Arequipa (46,000) and Lambayeque (42,000),” explained Óscar Chávez, head of the Institute of Economy and Business Development of the Chamber of Commerce of Lima.

Another important fact is that the 32.1% of the nini population is poor. However, in a comparison with 2020, the year the pandemic began, a considerable decrease is reflected. In 2020, the ninis exceeded 2 million.

Among the alternatives to reduce this index, the institute emphasized improving public policy to protect this human capital: education and work They are the pillars of inclusion of these young people in society.
