Peru will receive the presidency of APEC 2024 in San Francisco (USA) in November of this year, reported Ambassador Carlos Chávez Tafur, president of the working group that organizes the summit that brings together the 21 Asia-Pacific economies.
The official stressed that the importance of this event lies in the fact that this region represents around 65% of global GDP and approximately 50% of world trade. “The presence of the United States, China, Russia and Japan give a very important economic dynamic,” he commented during a meeting at the Foreign Ministry.
He also specified that since 1998, the year in which Peru joined APEC, Peru’s trade with that region has grown 12% per year. “There is a record for the year 2021 that indicates that 5,200 Peruvian companies exported goods for almost US$38,000 million. And imports from the region to Peru have reached almost US$30,500 million,” he explained.
In addition, he emphasized that 1,500 MSMEs and 2,200 Peruvian SMEs maintain commercial activity with Asia-Pacific countries.
The APEC 2024 agenda
For the first time, APEC 2024 will have women’s empowerment in trade on its agenda, so a joint meeting of women’s ministers will be held in May of next year. and foreign trade ministers of the countries that make up the region. This in order to agree on alignments that help to have areas that can encourage this strengthening of female participation in commerce.
It will also include the issue of the transition to formality, which is a very sensitive issue in Peru. To do this, it will focus on instruments such as innovation and digital connectivity.
