The Ministry of Production (Produces) reported that there will not be the first fishing season in order to preserve the anchovy resource. The decision is made after the conclusion, this Thursday, June 8, of the exploratory fishing carried out by the Institute of the Sea of Peru (Imarpe)where the incidence of juveniles was revealed in 86.3% and 77% in weight units.
“If we allowed fishing activities to take place at this time, for anchovy, what we would do is prey on the resource and affect the evolution of this fishery in the following years. The most responsible thing is not to start the season, so that we have the possibility of the activity recovering to the extent that the sea recovers the temperature that the anchovy needs,” said Raúl Pérez Reyes, head of Produce.
Along these lines, he stressed that in the next two or three weeks they will see the evolution of the kelvin waves and based on this and the Pacific cyclone, they will evaluate a fourth oceanographic research departure to re-inspect the situation of the fishing resource. He also reiterated that the adult anchovy has lost its weight by 12% and 15%, as a consequence of having had to move deeper to obtain the temperature it requires, for which reason it has also changed its food.
“The sizes observed in the landings of the first three days of exploratory fishing have a range between 7.0 and 15.0 cm TL, with a main mode of 10.0 cm and a secondary mode of 11.0 cm TL. In the same way, the incidence of juveniles reaches 86.3% in number of individuals and 77% in units of weight”, can be read in the Produce statement.
As recalled, on June 2, Produce, through Resolution No. 000191-2023-PRODUCE, established the start of the first 2023 fishing season for the anchovy and white anchovy resource in the area between the extreme north of the domain sea of Peru and 16°00’LS. However, it was subject to the conclusions and recommendations of Imarpe as a result of exploratory fishing.
