Midagri will allocate more than S/1,000 million for prevention of the El Niño phenomenon

The National Water Authority (ANA)institution in charge of Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigationreported on the preparatory activities given the probabilities of the arrival of the El Niño phenomenon in Peru.

In this sense, the entity announced that the budget required for prevention activities before the advent of the El Niño phenomenon exceeds S / 1,007 million. These include the clearing and cleaning of canals, rivers and drains, which will be carried out between July and December of this year, a period known as “window” given the “very high probability” of the presence of intense rains in the north and the water deficit in the south of the country.

Added to this is the purchase of heavy machinery, the assembly of dynamic barriers and transversal dikes, as well as the installation of wells in the south, among other actions.

The balance allocated for clearing and cleaning work is S/578 million, which will be carried out at 549 points identified by ANA: Tumbes (29), Piura (94), Lambayeque (90), La Libertad (88). , Ancash (90), Lima (76) and Ica (82).

Critical points are those places within the river beds and streams that have been weakened by the increase in flows.

A budget of S/239.4 million has also been requested for the acquisition of heavy machinery, such as caterpillar tractors, hydraulic excavators, front loaders and others, which will be used for immediate care tasks before and after the presence of the weather events.

Finally, the installation of 40 new metallic meshes or dynamic barriers is planned with a budget of S/90 million, and their implementation will begin between August and September to culminate in December. It should be noted that meshes are currently in operation in 19 streams in the upper parts of Lima.
