They warn of a high presence of juveniles in the exploratory fishing authorized by Produce

On Thursday, June 1, the Ministry of Production (Produce) authorized the start of exploratory anchovy fishing for seven days, from Saturday the 3rd to Friday the 9th of this month, which will give way to the first industrial fishing season of 2023. According to unofficial reports, catches have a high incidence of juveniles; that is, they are catching this species with sizes smaller than 12 cm, This has been warned by Oceana Peru.

“The first results of the 2023 exploratory fishing, obtained from unofficial sources, indicate, in addition to few catches, an overwhelming presence of juveniles. For this reason, Oceana Peru considers that the State must have a precautionary approach that ensures the recovery capacity of the stock at the end of the anomalous conditions that we are experiencing,” the organization explained.

Similarly, the congressman for Áncash and president of the Consumer Defense Commission, Elías Varas Meléndez (Perú Bicentenario), sent a letter to the head of Produce, Raúl Pérez Reyes. In this he requested an immediate intervention from his sector, in order to carry out evaluations to correct and prevent predation of juvenile anchovy, in addition to informing the actions to be carried out in the short term.

“We have been informed that excessive juvenile fishing is currently being carried out above the fishing limit of the minimum catch sizes indicated by Imarpe, preying on the country’s maritime fauna and affecting the life cycle of these species for adequate consumption. and balance of the maritime ecosystem,” said the legislator in the letter.
