Peru is the second largest copper producer in the world. The first place is held by Chile. The panorama would change between 2026 and 2027, since Congo will now escort its southern neighbor in copper matters, according to the Wood Mackenzie agency.
The African country may even displace Chile from the top, according to Reuters.
Rubén Arrieta, director of Wood Mackenzie, pointed out that Copper extraction in Congo was similar to that registered in Peru during 2022: 2,438,631 tons. PFor its part, Chile produced 5,327,500 tons.
In the previous decade, the African country registered an average volume of 500,000 tons per year, a sign of its accelerated growth, added Arrieta.
Why would you go to Peru? Wood Mackenzie warns that our country has 18 new mining projects, but only one would be developed in the short term.
“The Congo has practically equaled the production of Peru (…) In the coming years, the Congo will surpass Peru”, he calculated. By 2030, Congo could lead the global ranking.
Reuters maintains that, for several years, Peru welcomed mining investments, but, after social conflicts, political instability and the absence of new projects, its status was put at stake. Meanwhile, the strict Chilean regulation would also affect its status as a copper leader.
