Rising prices: which cities in Peru suffered the highest inflation in May?

In May, consumer prices increased in 21 of the 26 cities From Peru. The highest variations were registered in Chimbote (0.77%), Chiclayo (0.68%), moyobamba (0.67%) Trujillo (0.57%), Huánuco (0.56%) Cajamarca (0.52%) and Pucallpa (0.51%), according to the latest report from the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics ( INEI).

In contrast, cities with falling prices were iquitos (-0.18%), Puerto Maldonado (-0.13%), Cusco (-0.13%), Moquegua (-0.10%) and Ica (-0.03%).

According to the report, the intense rains registered since April, which were aggravated by Cyclone Yaku, caused the loss of crops and affected the normal supply of productswhich had an impact on a price increase in tomato, red head onion, cilantro, lettuce, celery, Chinese onion, among others.

How was the evolution of prices in the year?

Between June 2022 and May 2023, three cities in the country show rates above 9%such as Trujillo (10.81%), Ica (9.59%) and cajamarca (9.25%). In the range of 9% to 8%, six cities are located: Tacna (8.75%), Arequipa (8.66%), Chiclayo (8.32%), Huaraz (8.27%), Piura (8 14%) and Puno (8.01%).

In the range that goes from 8% to 7%, 10 cities are included: Chimbote (8%), Metropolitan Lima (7.89%), moquegua (7.77%), Abancay (7.74%), Huánuco (7.68%), Cerro de Pasco (7.57%), Tarapoto (7.47%), Huancavelica (7.19%), Ayacucho and Chachapoyas, both with (7.09%) each.

Finally, with growth of less than 6%, two cities in the jungle can be identified: Iquitos and Pucallpaboth with 5.99% each.

Inflation decline is still slow

For the second consecutive month, inflation in Lima —which is a reference to that of Peru— it registered a figure below 8%, standing at 7.90% as of May 2023, the lowest in 14 months. However, the downward trend is still slow.

Let us remember that the president of the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP), Julio Velarde, indicated that in May the drop in the inflation it may take longer than one expects. However, projected that by the first quarter of 2024 it will return to the range of 1% to 3% due to the effect of lower international food and energy prices, and the supply in the local agricultural sector.
