Potato exports exceeded US$542,000 in the first quarter of 2023

This May 30th is celebrated the National Potato Day, whose objective is to reinforce the identity of this tuber by showing that it is 100% Peruvian and that it had its origins in the Andes, becoming throughout history an important source of food throughout the world. In that sense, The export of this food in the first quarter of the year amounted to US$542,614. Of which total, 81% was with added value —mainly fried in flakes and thread— and the remaining 19% in its fresh or refrigerated presentation of the huayro and yellow varieties.

According to data from the Association of Exporters (ADEX), shipments in recent years (first quarter) had a variable behavior, since they fell 1% in 2020 (US$620,707), grew 26% in 2021 (US$783,841) and then closed with -30% in the 2022 (US$545,932). Likewise, exports in the three months of 2023 represent a contraction of 1%.

The main international markets for this tuber were South America. In its presentation of flakes, string and dry it reached Bolivia (US$247,752), Chile (US$127,264), the United States (US$24,439), Uruguay (US$13,372) and Mexico (US$12,937). Others were Japan, the Netherlands, Italy, Panama, Switzerland and Aruba.

Meanwhile, fresh or frozen potatoes reached five markets, whose ranking was led by Bolivia with US$51,636, followed by Chile, Italy, Aruba and USA. Shipments were made mainly by land.

ADEX’s Agro-export Management highlighted that Peru exported potatoes in their traditional and organic presentation.
