The Lima Chamber of Commerce (CCL) reported that the importation of bicycles has registered a growth of 215% as of October of this year, compared to the same period last year, after acquiring 673,545 units for a value of US $ 51 million.
According to a report from the CCL Foreign Trade Research and Development Institute (Idexcam), the increase would also be explained by greater technological development in the commercial sector that requires this type of mobility for the delivery service.
“Today there is an increase in purchases and orders from digital platforms, which has led to the delivery of products at home not only through the use of motorcycles, but also with bicycles,” said the head of Idexcam, Óscar Quinones.
He stressed that, before the pandemic, the importation of bicycles increased only in the months close to festive dates such as Christmas and New Years. Thus, in 2018, the total number of imported units of bicycles was 310,903 units with an imported value of US $ 17 million.
For 2019, the figure rose to 329,060 units with an imported value of US $ 18 million, which meant an increase of 5.8% compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, in 2020, the growth was 64%, since a total of 539,783 units were imported with a value of US $ 29 million.
The main bicycle supplier in Peru is China, and in October 2021 its participation in Peruvian imports was 98.37% with an imported quantity of 662,542 units and a value of US $ 47 million.
“This value of bicycle purchases from China far exceeds what was achieved in the 2020 period, whose imported quantity was 284,329 units valued at US $ 13 million,” said Óscar Quiñones.
