Gondolas in Kuelap can transport up to 4,000 visitors daily

He Kuelap gondola projectawarded by ProInversión in 2014, is an initiative in the region of Amazon that allows the transfer from the district of Tingo to Kuelap in just 20 minutes. Before, by means of vehicles or walks, the journey took up to two hours, with high risk and higher cost. In this way, it seeks to promote visits to the archaeological complex in the area and boost tourism.

To date, yese can transport with the 26 cabins up to 4,000 passengers a daya figure that represents the same number of average visitors that Machu Picchu receives, with a maximum frequency of departures of 10 minutes.

Thus, its transfer potential to users is broad. In the future, it is expected to increase —according to demand— the number of cabins to 56 and reach up to 8,000 passengers per day.

It should be noted that the cable cars began operating in March 2017, increasing the number of visitors to the Kuelap fortress from 56,000 in 2016 to 108,000 in 2017, an increase of 93% in just one year, and for 2019 120,000 passengers were registered. The cost of the project was US$21 million (including VAT).

However, the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted the upward trend and by 2020 only 32,000 passengers were transferred, while in 2021 it rose to 71,000. Despite this trend, in 2022 visits dropped to 48,000 due to the suspension of entry to the complex due to the collapse of the wall at the southern end.
