Environmental permit for electric interconnection Ecuador-Peru

The electrical interconnection project between Ecuador and Peru already has an environmental permit that enables its implementation and obtaining construction loans that will come from multilateral organizations.

The Ecuadorian Electric Corporation (Celec EP) reported on May 19, 2023 that it had received an environmental permit through Transelectric for this interconnection, which entails 500 thousand volts.

Fuel imports have already almost equaled crude oil exports

The license was issued by the Ministry of Environment, Water and Ecological Transition by Decision no. MAATE-SCA-2023-0006-R.

Of the 289 million dollars of investment required for the works, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) will allocate 125 million dollars, and the European Investment Bank (EIB) another 125 million dollars. The difference will be settled with Celec’s own resources, it is stated in the press release of this entity.

With 125 million dollars, the IDB will finance the Ecuadorian part of the electrical interconnection with Peru

And he points out that this interconnection will enable energy exchange between the two countries, take advantage of hydrological complementarity, contribute to greater security of electricity supply and create economic benefits for the Ecuadorian electricity sector. In addition, with its entry into operation, heat production will be replaced by subsidized fuels, which will reduce carbon emissions.

This extra high voltage system will cross the provinces of Guayas and El Oro, and includes several works:

Celec also points out that the construction of this system will generate more than 1,000 direct and indirect jobs in Ecuador.

The interconnection will also enable regional energy integration in South America, promoting the establishment of a sub-regional electricity market, in accordance with the regulation of the Andean Community, which seeks to facilitate the exchange of electricity in the region.
