President Guillermo Lasso received the IESS authorities in Carondelet to review the state of the institution.
A meeting was held behind closed doors between President Guillermo Lasso and the authorities of the Ecuadorian Social Security Institute (IESS), on the afternoon of November 23, in order to review the situation facing the entity.
The meeting took place at the Carondelet Palace, in Quito, and was announced at night, through a brief three-paragraph bulletin and a short 35-second video, broadcast by the General Secretariat of Communication of the Presidency.
In the video, the general director of the IESS, Nelson García, stated that a balance of the current social security conditions was presented to the president. On the basis of the talks, the creation of a dialogue table was proposed, to reach certain solutions in the economic and operational part, said García.
The IESS would receive $ 1,249 million less than what it requested from Finance in proforma 2022
For his part, the Minister of Finance, Simón Cueva, who also participated in the meeting, said that progress to strengthen social security was also analyzed. In addition, different ideas of possible reforms or changes were discussed, with a view to the medium-term sustainability of the IESS.
The information shared by the Ministry of Communication does not detail more aspects of the topics discussed, nor does it mention the figures presented by the Institute’s authorities or what were the reform proposals mentioned by Cueva.
Within the budget proforma for 2022, which the Government raised and the Assembly observed, the IESS will receive from the State $ 1,249 million less than what had been required from the Ministry of Finance. The entity requested $ 2,832 million, but the amount assigned by in the proforma is $ 1,583 million. (I)
