After two weeks of waiting, the Congress of the republic sent to the Executive the autograph of the law that seeks to prioritize artisanal fishing in the five nautical miles to ensure the sustainability of resources. Now, the Government of Dina Boluarte has until Monday, May 22 to officially publish or observe it.
Various unions of artisanal fishermen have sent letters to President Boluarte to request its promulgation as soon as possible, since they fear that the fishing industry lobby could hinder its progress. “We are waiting for you, as a representative of the country, to intercede by supporting the publication of the standard, thus ensuring our source of work,” said Pilar Aguirre, president of the Pucusana Nautical Tour and Artisanal Fishing Committee.
For their part, the representatives of 31 trade union organizations stressed: “True artisanal fishermen have always been forgotten by the State, Madam President. With the aforementioned law, we finally feel recognized!, since our demands of yesteryear are being met: the real protection of the five miles of these predatory boats”.
The proposal approved in Congress groups six important modifications, among them a management of the fishing fleet in which ancestral and artisanal fishing have priority in the five miles, and the creation of the registry of artisanal fishermen.
In addition, it highlights the establishment of a report on permitted fishing gear and methods, putting a cap on the discounts of fines in the sector, among others.
