This week is the deadline for faucets to adapt their offer to only two types of fuels

This week is the deadline for taps across the country to adapt their offer to only two types of gasoline-derived fuels: Regular and Premiumin addition to the 84 octane variety, which will have a tolerance period as part of the economic recovery period.

According to Supreme Decree No. 018-2022-EM, This Sunday, April 30, the 120 days that taps and service stations had to update their dashboards culminateTherefore, as of Monday, May 1, the nomenclatures of 90, 95 and 97 octane must disappear from the market. Before, wholesale producers basically Petroperu and Repsolthey had adapted their offer with a February deadline.

In this way, only 6 liquid fuels will remain on the market to accompany the diesel supply: Regular Gasoline, Regular Gasohol, Premium Gasoline, Premium Gasohol, 84 Octane Gasoline and 84 Octane Gasohol.

Regarding the exception with the variety of 84 octane, the gasohol presentation may continue to be sold, throughout the territory, until December 2023. Meanwhile, the gasoline presentation may be found until June 2024 in Amazonas, Loreto, Madre de Dios and San Martín. It was decided this way because it was the cheapest and easily accessible for carriers with fewer resources, but its consumption is minimal on a national scale.

Why a difference between gasoline and gasohol? Gasohol, basically, is 92.2% gasoline to which 7.8% fuel alcohol is added to improve its octane performance and make it more environmentally friendly. Its sale is mandatory throughout Peru.

However, alcohol is an isopropyl element that does not react well in some humid regions, such as the jungle. That is why in the easternmost cities of the country the sale of gasoholes is not allowed, and never will be.

Regular and Premium gasoline: will prices rise?

It should be noted that the new Regular presentation is equivalent to an average level of 92 octane; while the Premium presentation reaches a powerful 97 octane rating. Peru, precisely, was one of the last countries in the region to implement this reduction in its fuel supply.

It is also important to highlight that this adaptation ordered by the Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) -and which will be supervised by Osinergmin- will not represent an increase in fuel prices, but will in the long run push the boards down, according to specialists, authorities and the taps themselves.
