ECommerce reached US$ 12,000 million in 2022

He electronic commerce presented a growth of 30% and generated $12 billion in revenue last yearaccording to the E-commerce Observatory 2022-2023 report of the Peruvian Chamber of Electronic Commerce (CAPECE). However, the union’s projection was to increase more than half, as in previous years.

“Our projection for this year was to exceed 50%, but the global economic crisis, the political crisis in Peru, the drop in consumption and, not least, the reactivation of the physical channel, influenced the performance of e-commerce. ”, said Helmut Cáceda, president of CAPECE.

He also specified that the sector that had the greatest increase was tourism, while e-commerce retail was the one that advanced the least. In detail, 15.3 million (46%) of Peruvians made their purchases online, of which only 30% were transactions made in the provinces.

Although online sales in regions are increasing at a rate of 50%, Lima continues to concentrate 88% of virtual commercial transfers.

“We hope that the State ends up understanding that providing tax incentives, such as a day without IGV, for electronic commerce, would end up accelerating the adoption of digital commerce both in companies and buyers,” said Cáceda.

Tourism and retail sector

In relation to tourism sector, the union reported that online sales grew 120% more in 2022 compared to 2021 and, for this year, expectations are positive. However, currently the levels reached in the pre-pandemic have not yet been recovered.

“Therefore, the tourism industry should further explore and develop this channel.l during 2023 to continue increasing its presence in the market and generate more revenue.”Caceda added.

On his side, he e-commerce retail It is the sector that grew the least, only reaching 10%. However, it continues to be the one with the highest participation and reaches 43.8% of the total volume of sales in electronic commerce.

“Since the pandemic, retail in the digital industry was not only the sector with the highest growth, but also the one that represented the greatest evolution. The international context, the political crisis and the activation of the physical channel diminished its performance”, added the executive.

Finally, the report detailed that electronic commerce represented 40% of consumption with cards in 2022. Sales through debit and credit that year exceeded US$8,000 million.
