The Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Luis Helgueroreported that the refund of the General Sales Tax (IGV) for tourists, known as Tax Free In more than 37 countries around the world that apply it today -5 in Latin America-, it would be effective from June with modules outside the Jorge Chávez International Airport for the physical refund of tax to visitors.
In an interview with TV Peru, the head of Mincetur said that they are working together with the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) to make the requirements for businesses that wish to adhere to Tax Free more flexible. The norm to return the IGV would be ready in a few days for its publication.
“It is something that we have been working on in the ministry practically since it existed, more than 20 years ago, and not only because other countries do it, but it is a technical issue. Taxes are not exported and tourism is an export, and under this criterion other countries have already implemented it, ”he assured.
In the same way, the minister explained that the businesses involved may apply for Tax Free as long as they belong to the categories of ‘very good taxpayer’, ‘good taxpayer’ and ‘normal taxpayer’. The idea of returning the IGV is to encourage formalization in the sector, he explained.
“The conversations are well advanced with LAP and they already inform me that they have the premises. The expectation we have is that this will be operational in June, but I would not be surprised if it is a little earlier,” Hleguero said.
