Congress demands information from Indecopi on the purchase of Enel Peru from the Chinese state

the bench of Advance Country requested information from the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi) regarding the sale of Enel Perú’s assets to China’s Southern Power Grid for US$2.9 billion.

Through an official letter, legislator Norma Yarrow called on the head of the regulatory body, Karin Cáceres, to clarify the actions taken to safeguard the right of consumers in the face of this transaction, which would leave the electricity distribution market in Peru in the hands of two Chinese state-owned companies. Before, Luz del Sur was bought by the China Three Gorges company.

“I am pleased to address you to cordially greet you and, at the same time, show my concern regarding the news that you report: Chinese presence in electricity advances: it would have more than 50% of the distribution in Peru. The aforementioned information indicates that Enel Perú has just reached an agreement with China Southern Power Grid International to sell part of its assets to it, ”says the document sent.

Likewise, the parliamentarian indicates that according to journalistic information “once the transaction is finalized, all electrical distribution operations in Lima, and 50% nationwide, would be in charge of companies from the People’s Republic of China.”

“In this sense, under Article 69 of the Regulations of the Congress of the Republic, I urgently request that you submit a report containing the actions carried out by your firm, in order to safeguard the rights of consumers, who could be affected by a possible increase in the electricity rate, due to a lack of competition in the sector”, concludes Yarrow Lumbreras.

It should be noted that Indecopi, through a press release, clarified that it has not been notified of the transaction between China Southern Power Grid International and Enel Américas, as it has been the Superintendence of the Stock Market (SMV).
